Dover to play for State Championship

Dover – 60 Tatnall – 50

Last night at the Bob Carpenter Center Dover High beat Tatnall in the Boys Basketball semifinals 60-50.

The Senators were lead by Senior Corey Crawford’s 29 points. He hit three 3-pointers and scored his 1,000th HS career point in the game’s first quarter. Crawford finished the night going 6 for 8 from the 3-point line.

Dover will play Sanford in the State Championship Game on Saturday @4P at the Bob.

This will be Dover’s fourth trip to the State Championship game. But they have never won the title.

Hopefully this year they can win it all!

GO Senators!

Et tu, Brute?

Below is the email I sent out to the CAG Staff regarding Attendee Review Month and the upcoming Spring 2010 Phone Directory.

Team CAG -

*** Attendee Review ***
To coincide with the publication of the Spring 2010 Phone Directory, I am implementing a month-long Attendee review.

*** You too, can help. ***
Please assist in the accuracy of Calvary’s database, and the Phone Directory, by

1) Verifying / Updating your individual / friends / family information (i.e.Names, Address, Phone Numbers, Email Addresses, Marital Status, Births, Deaths).

Updates can be accomplished by visiting ShelbyLife.calvarydover.org/InfoUpdate or by completing a Update Form available at the Help Center.

2) Quickly reviewing the attached file.

Attached is a Name List of our current regular attendees.
If you know anyone on this list that is not a regular attendee of Calvary, for whatever reason, please let me know.
Ministry Team members will be getting more detailed lists.

*** Beware the Ides of March ***
Submissions are due March 15th.

The Spring 2010 Phone Directory will go to press on March 30, 2010.

I’ll need the Resource Room copier the 30th, 31th, and, possibly, the 1st.
In an effort to make it easier for all, I will start printing at 8A March 30th.

The Proverbial Box

Recently, I’ve been discussing retention rates w/ our Associate Pastor.

I’ve processed reports that showed individuals entered in 2009. The attendee report showed individuals entered in 2009 that are now attendees and sorted it by age. There was also a prospects report that showed individuals entered in 2009 that are still prospects. The prospects report showed visit dates, entered date, age. The attendee report was easy to analyze, but the prospect report was difficult to analyze to a clear conclusion.

We are asking ourselves if we are capturing a significant percentage of the area population. Are our visitors staying at our church? Is there an age segment that is more proportionally staying or leaving?

Looking at charts and graphs seems is like having little tiny boxes to put people into.

We need to not only analyze these numbers, but also apply the analysis to correctly minister to these individuals.
What in their life journey made them stay or leave the church? And what can be our part in that life journey?

BTW – I also created a Pandora ShelbyLife Station. Although I didnt realize you can only listen to it for 40 hours a month for free, then you have to pay $1 for the rest of the month.

Family gives up on…

Found this interesting article about a Miami family that moved to North Dakota. They moved 1,800 miles b/c of financial incentives and good marketing. The small Midwestern-town 45 miles outside Bismarck was giving cash and free land to encourage families to make it their home. There was also the assumptions of friendliness, low crime rate, and low cost-of-living usually associated with life in a small town.

The family highlighted in the article was greatly disappointed though.

There was the free land, cash, and low taxes.

But the big disappointment was the anti-friendliness. A few of the better quotes from the family on the subject:

No one really wants new people here.

People prejudge you without getting to know you,

People thought I was a drug dealer,

visitors
How does the modern church parallel w/ this small Midwestern town?

We promise health, wealth, and your best life now. We market well (well, at least we try to). Some churches give out small gifts and preferred parking to their guests. Is it a ‘Good Morning’ on Sunday morning or a sideways glance and prejudgment? Are their phones ringing Monday afternoon to welcome them into our activities, our homes, our lives?

Read the article – Florida family gives up on small-town North Dakota.

How many places can you substitute ‘church’ for ’small-town’?

And how can you prevent people from saying this about your church:

It’s been quite an experience, 50-50 at best

Where Are They Now?

watn

One of the recent discussions has been on the worth of moving ppl from ‘Attendee’ to ‘Prospect’ / ‘Miscellaneous’.

Our Lead Pastor brought up a good point in that when ppl stop attending, they are moved to ‘Prospect’, thus removed from contact lists. They then lose all regular contact from Calvary. At the moment when they might be needing some contact, b/c of whatever reason they stop attending, they are less likely to. And this may lead them to not desire to re-attend.

To help solve this figurative disappearing, I created a few new reports in Shelby. The reports show -

1) Phone Number

2) Input Date

3) Date Moved to AT

4) Date Moved to PS/MS

5) Received from: [this is how they first came into Calvary – Sunday Worship, LIFE Classes, Children’s Ministry, etc)

6) Last Date attended Sunday Worship

7) Last Date attended LIFE Classes

8) Module

9) Membership Status (card-carrying member status)

These reports will show the timeline of first visit, becoming a regular attendee, and non-attendance. It will also show if there is a certain entry point (received from) that doesnt correspond well to keeping regular attendees. The Membership Status will show how many Card Members left for each month.

Hopefully this will help us retain more ppl.

And help Calvary answer the question ‘Where Are They Now?’

Next post maybe I’ll do something on ‘Pop-Up Video’ or ‘One-Hit Wonders.’

Do I know you?

Currently at Calvary Assembly of God, we make it look like our guests just came from McD’s.

During the service, we pause and ask our guests to raise a hand. Our ushers then give them a guest packet. The guest packet contains some print material (guest book, calendar, map, weekly bulletin, and pen) in a bright yellow bag. This serves two purposes. The first purpose being the bright yellow bag that draws attention to them so our regular attendees can know to say hi, make them feel welcome, and answer any questions. The second being that it guarantees that they are given a guest book which contains information on ministries, groups, classes, etc.

But we are rethinking this.

Do we need the bright yellow bag? Do we even need to hand them anything?

How will we get them information on our church? Do we need to make sure they get it, or in today’s culture are they finding it other places?

So I was assigned to survey other churches.

How do you handle recognizing guests?

Do you make sure they receive print material or it it available at a Help / Welcome Center?

How do your regular attendees know who the guests are?

Leave a response in the comments, please. I am looking for lots of feedback here.
