Here are some basic programs to run to help keep your computer running optimally.
The ones I use are starred. I run them once a week.
You may need to ask IT how/if you can download and install some of these programs on your computer.

A) System Tools
- Installed components on Windows XP computers.
- You can find them here:

1) *Disk Clean-Up*
> Searches and analyzes for files that are no longer of any use.
> Removes the unnecessary files, freeing up disk space on the hard drive.

2) *Disk Defragmenter*
> Rearranges files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations.
> Optimizes the time it takes to read and write files to/from the disk by minimizing head travel time and maximizing the transfer rate.

B) Spyware
- Computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer, without the user’s informed consent.
- Running anti-spyware software has become a widely recognized element of computer security best practices for Microsoft Windows desktop computers.

1) *Spyware Terminator* - Download Install File
> Will scan your computer for known threats and report findings in a manner that is easy to read and interpret.
> Every entry is given a rating and a classification, which makes it very easy to decide if a detected item should be removed.

2) *Spybot - Search & Destroy* - Download Install File
> Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware.
> A full scan applies more than 600,000 tests.

Ad-Aware - Download Install File
> Keeps you safe from password stealers, keyloggers, spyware, trojans, and other potential identity thieves.

C) Computer Virus
- A computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user.

1) *AVG Free* - Download Install File
> Basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows available to download for free.

Also Good
1) Symantec - should already be installed on CAG computers in the All Programs menu
> Searches for viruses, spyware and worms.
> Protects your computer from dangerous email attachments.
